How to choose rollerblades for children?
Choosing roller skates for a child can be a real challenge, especially if it's the child's first skate. Which model should they choose, inline or roller skates? At what age can a child start rollerblading? What is a multi-size roller? These are just some of the questions parents ask themselves when it comes to investing wisely in a pair of roller skates. Nomadeshop takes a look at everything you need to know about children's rollerblades.
Quality multi-size rollerballs
For a first pair, some parents are tempted to use supermarket toys or rollerblades. We advise against this approach in terms of comfort, sturdiness and safety. A child who is in pain, or whose foot is not properly supported, will not be able to control his or her rollerblades properly, nor progress normally.
Children's roller skates are multi-sized, in fact, they are scalable to 4 or 5 sizes. Models don't necessarily cover the same size ranges, so apart from the notion of comfort and foot hold, this is the major selection criterion. This is what will enable you to offer a sturdy children's roller that will last for many years.
At what age can you start rollerblading?
Generally speaking, children can start rollerblading from the age of 5-6. However, as with walking, there are no written rules for learning coordination. So, if your child lacks balance on foot, give him a little time before putting him on rollerblades.
In terms of minimum size, 25 for inline skates and 29 for quad skates (roller skates).
Don't hesitate to do an in-store test, a roller rental or a children's roller skating lesson with the Roller Club de France (RCF), Nomadeshop's privileged partner, before making a purchase.
Learn to rollerblade
Before children can rollerblade independently in the city, they need to master the basics of the sport. It's essential to know how to brake, stop, slow down, turn and accelerate...
Roller Club de France teaches rollerblading to children aged 7 and over. With a fun, relaxed approach to learning, children discover roller skating through a variety of games and activities that teach them the technical basics and safety rules inherent in the sport. Lessons last 1 h 30 and end with a snack (offered by the club).
Please note that a pair of roller skates purchased entitles the holder to a free children's roller skating lesson.
Roller price ranges
Would your child like to learn to rollerblade, and are you looking to buy their first pair of skates? To start with, look for models with composite decks, which are fairly lightweight. In general, these skates are fitted with a semi-rigid plastic shell shoe that provides good support when learning. K2, Rollerblade and Powerslide rollers offer the best value for money on the market. Prices for children's rollerblades range from €89.90 to €129.90.
For an advanced level and more regular practice, it's best to choose a pair of rollerblades with a more resistant and precise aluminum plate. If your child is more at ease on rollerblades, or if this is his second pair, it's worth investing in this type of roller, which will last longer and give him much more hold and precision when skating.
Which roller size to choose?
Choosing the right size for your child's roller skates isn't always easy, because you're investing in a pair of skates that may quickly become too small. Depending on the child's age and morphology, his feet can become too big for skates in as little as six months! That's why we sometimes think of buying a pair a few sizes larger than the normal size, to enjoy them a little longer. On the other hand, this can make skating more difficult, and even dangerous. If the child's feet float inside the skates, this can cause balance problems, and the lack of support will prevent the child from skating properly. Not to mention the blisters and sores caused by friction.
To solve this problem, brands have created adjustable-size roller skates. Depending on the brand chosen, this children's roller will adjust to the child's feet and follow their growth over 2-3 sizes. Note that the entire instep is enlarged, guaranteeing the best possible fit whatever the size.
Falls are inevitable if you want to learn to rollerblade, and this is a source of great anxiety for parents. But you mustn't be afraid of them, and remember that children are much more flexible than adults. And because they're smaller than we are, they don't fall as far. To protect them, it's important to equip them with a child's roller protection kit: wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, helmet.
For initial training, opt for the smoothest possible surface. Ideally, you should find a place with a defined perimeter, as children new to rollerblading have not yet mastered their trajectories.
How to maintain and preserve children's rollerballs?
To ensure that your child's roller skates last a long time, it is necessary to regularly tighten small parts or change parts. If your child uses these rollerblades every week, check them every 2 weeks or so. If he or she uses them only occasionally, 1 check per month will be sufficient.
You'll find all our children's roller models and advice on our website, in our Paris store or with our team of Roller Club de France instructors.
And once you've perfected your technique, you'll be able to take part in the Sunday hike that starts in front of the store with the "Rollers et Coquillages" association.
