What is a speed roller?

The speed skate or roller touring skate is a type of skate that allows you to glide (slider for the purists) in the street, but especially to compete in speed skating. These skates are notably composed of a boot, a spoiler allowing to maintain the ankle, laces as well as several fasteners in order to feel as comfortable as possible in the boots, this is the case for some models and not for the whole range of our products.

Speed skating races are mainly held on one of the "road" rings. Several race formats exist:

  • The inline race, the first skater to cross the finish line wins this event. This is the most common format in this sport.
  • The elimination race: at each lap, one skater is eliminated. In the first and last laps there is no elimination. The end of the event is like an inline race.
  • The points race, during each lap, points are awarded to the first three skaters to cross the line. The winner is the skater with the most points.
  • The American style relay race, which is a team race of 3-4 skaters. The relays are carried out by pushing the other skater in order to give him/her a starting impulse.
  • Finally, the time trial race. This is an event that takes place over a set distance (100, 200 or 300m) in the shortest possible time, and can be similar to a sprint.

The speed shoe is a very specialised version of the basic skate as it consists of a carbon composite or fibreglass shell with a leather or synthetic covering. In order to achieve the best performance, the shoe must fit in the best possible way and as close to the shape as possible.

How to choose a speed roller?

Concerning the plate that can be found on this type of roller. The latter is made of an aluminium-based alloy or more recently of carbon. On some models of speed skates, the deck has 3 to 5 wheels with a diameter ranging from 80 to 125 mm. At Nomadeshop, we offer rollerblades for touring.
