Coming straight from Japan and designed by sweet Kendamas, the kendama is a wooden toy that has become hugely popular among riders. Combining technical tricks and skill-based gameplay, this traditional Japanese game has been entertaining both kids and adults for several years now.

What is a kendama?

A kendama consists of a handle, onto which a ball attached by a string must be placed in balance. Like a cup-and-ball toy, the kendama is fun, but also requires a certain level of skill.

Present in Japan for several centuries, it was not until the early 2000s that it made its appearance in France and around the world, especially in the field of freestyle scooters and freestyle in general. In fact, the kendama has almost become a sporting practice, with numerous player scenes emerging every year.

How to choose your kendama?

Contrary to popular belief, not all kendamas are created equal. The choice of kendama should take several criteria into account.

The wood species of the kendama

A kendama can be made from various wood species. The majority of kendamas are made from beechwood, but they can also be found in ash, maple, bamboo, walnut, oak, or even mahogany. The choice of wood will have repercussions at several levels.

● The design of the kendama: each wood offers a different visual aspect;

● The texture of the kendama: depending on the wood, the Japanese cup-and-ball toy can be more or less rough or soft, and pleasant to the touch;

● The weight of the kendama: each wood has a different density, which makes the toy heavier or lighter;

● The sturdiness of the kendama: some woods are more prone to aging, but also more resistant to shocks.

The weight of the kendama

As we have seen, the wood species determines the weight of the toy, and this is essential for a good kendama practice. Generally, the weight of a kendama ranges from 130 to 180 grams. The difference may seem small, but it offers different gaming sensations and grip.

But ultimately, the choice of the weight of the kendama depends mainly on personal preferences. Some prefer a heavy kendama, while others are more comfortable with a lighter model. The best way is to make your own opinion by testing different kendamas. Ideally, you should find a kendama whose ken (handle) weight and tama (ball) weight are not too different.

The type of coating on the kendama ball (tama)

When we talk about the coating of the tama, we are not talking about the color, but the material that covers the ball. This is crucial in practice and can vary from one brand or manufacturer to another.

● The tama with several paint colors and varnish: the varnish makes the ball smooth and shiny, but it must be recognized that this coating is slippery;

● The natural tama: nothing is more traditional and resistant than a natural tama, but its handling will be more or less easy depending on the type of wood;

● The tama with adhesive paint: the paint that sticks adapts to all levels, but beware of the string, which can sometimes get caught in it.
