When you're a beginner, choosing your first freestyle scooter can be difficult given the number of models and brands that exist. How do you choose a freestyle scooter? Is it better to choose a full scooter or a custom scooter? On this page, you will find the answers to all these questions!

The characteristics of the freestyle scooter

The freestyle scooter is a model of scooter with which it is possible to do acrobatic figures (tricks) in street or skatepark. They are stronger, stiffer and more responsive than conventional scooters for adults or children. They are equipped, for example, with reinforced wheels and handlebars that turn 360°.

Many riders use their freestyle trot' on a daily basis. There are now tens of thousands of riders around the world doing Buttercup, Scooterflip and Kickless or Flair and Backflip for those with a higher level. Whether you are a pro freestyle scooter rider or a flow team, it is important to choose the right one. On Nomadeshop, the choice is varied and allows everyone to find the freestyle scooter that corresponds to their tastes and level.

In our freestyle scooter shop you can buy a pro, intermediate or beginner freestyle scooter and customise it with a wide range of products, parts and accessories. It will be easier for you to buy a standard freestyle scooter if you are just starting out or if you have a small budget, by turning to entry-level scooters such as the FUZION  freestyle scooters or the HADES freestyle scooters. However, for the more creative, it is possible to make your own custom scooter. You can create a custom freestyle scooter with our "custom maker" tool and upon delivery you will receive a scooter that reflects your image, ready to be ridden.

At Nomadeshop, the whole world of trotting is available as well as the most famous brands. You can also get a lot of advice in our Parisian shop or thanks to our videos available on our networks and social media.

The different spare parts of the freestyle scooter

There are 8 main components that make up a freestyle scooter, and which contribute to the overall look, feel and performance of the scooter. Find out more about the parts of the freestyle scooter.

Deck

The freestyle scooter deck is the most important component of your scooter, it is its base. It comes in different lengths, widths, shapes and styles, so it's important to choose the right type. Current industry standard bases have one-piece bodies and integrated head tubes.

Handlebars

Handlebars determine how your freestyle scooter will behave. The dimensions of your handlebars are reduced to your size and personal preferences.

Aluminium or steel handlebars?

For slim, light and medium sized riders, an aluminium handlebar is the best choice for skatepark riding. Lighter but not as strong as a steel handlebar, it will suit this type of rider perfectly. On the other hand, strong riders should opt for heavier and more resistant steel handlebars to avoid breakage. Titanium is reserved for riders who are looking for lightness and strength, usually we recommend it to experienced riders who already have a good experience in this sport.

What size handlebars?

Ideally, freestyle scooter handlebars should be high enough to fit between your belly button and your crotch. The width of the handlebars will affect the reactivity of the tricks: the wider the handlebars, the more strength and stability you will have in your tricks. However, it will be less easy to perform tricks requiring a rotation of the handlebars, the latter being longer, the rotation will also be longer and therefore more complicated to perform.

Clamp

This is the clamp that holds the handlebars and fork firmly in place, so that they can rotate in unison, while not separating from each other.

Compression kit

The compression system is the system that holds your handlebars and fork together using the platform, while allowing you to adjust the steering.

Fork

This is the direct link through the joints of the scooter. A compression system is needed to ensure that the fork sticks firmly to the handlebars. When choosing a fork, it is important to ensure that you choose the right size wheels.

Steering games

These elements allow you to drive your freestyle scooter and perform manoeuvres.

Wheels

The freestyle scooter wheels have a great influence on the performance and overall appearance of the freestyle scooter. Wheels consist of several parts: rubber, polyurethane and core. Wheels with a metal core offer much more support while riding.

Brake

The brake is a small part, but it is a very important part. The brake is attached to the back of the freestyle scooter with a bolt or a screw, depending on the model. Most riders use a flexible or spring brake. The flex brake is a piece of steel or nylon shaped to fit around the back of the platform, while simultaneously, but comfortably, hugging the rear wheel. This brake is essentially silent and will provide you with all the braking or protection you need.

Choosing a full or custom freestyle scooter?

Need a complete quality freestyle scooter? It's over here!

With more than 100 models of freestyle scooters, the Nomadeshop scooter shop has something for all levels, tastes and budgets: from cheap freestyle scooters for beginners such as the VERSATYL freestyle scooters to pro freestyle scooters for confirmed riders with the BLUNT freestyle scooters used by champions. At Nomadeshop you will find what you are looking for. Join our community of urban board sports enthusiasts now!

Complete or custom?

If you're just starting out, it's best to avoid headaches and choose a complete freestyle scooter. It offers an ideal compromise between manoeuvrability and resistance and is perfectly suited to beginners. What's more, it's cheaper than a custom scooter (in kit form). Then, when you are a pro, you can choose a custom freestyle scooter. This way, you'll have a custom scooter that meets your expectations. To create it, you can use our Custom Maker!

Skatepark or street?

For those who like the Park, a light and reactive scooter is more recommended. Lightweight aluminium parts are preferred for maximum efficiency on ramps, boxes and copings (ramp edges). For maximum lightness, you can turn to ETHIC freestyle scooters. For example, a solid and efficient steering with a quality headset and a short and light deck will help you to be more responsive in the air. For street riding, however, we recommend stable and very sturdy scooters with heavier but stronger parts such as steel handlebars or thicker forks. With this type of freestyle scooter you will have a perfect riding feeling on the urban elements.

Whatever your type of ride, remember that there is no one type of freestyle scooter for any particular ride and these are just technical tips to get you started. You may well be riding a very large and heavy pro freestyle scooter in a bowl (a bowl dug out of the ground) because you are looking for stability in the air and on the copings (steel tubes at the top of the ramps to slide on) more than you are looking for speed through your combos.

Even if you are only planning to do Park and you are a beginner, consider getting a very strong freestyle scooter. By the time you learn to master your tricks, your scooter will have taken a lot of hits and will quickly become brittle. A solid all-round scooter like the Blunt Prodigy S8, with its robust compression system, may be a better choice than an Erawan, which weighs less and costs less, but is also more durable and solid. When you're a beginner, remember also to maintain and tighten your scooter often to prevent the parts from becoming loose. Our new customers often come to us with service problems, often related to a lack of maintenance or breaking in of parts.

Essential equipment

If you use the right protective scooter equipment, you will not only be safe, but you will also be able to progress faster. Below we show you the equipment and scooter accessories you need to practice. You will also need the right clothing to practice safely and look stylish.

Headset

Let's start with the top. This is the most important part of the whole. And just to remind you, a bone can heal but not the brain. So you need to look for a helmet that is comfortable and well ventilated. Helmets come in many colours and designs, so you have no excuse not to wear one.

And why do you need to buy a helmet suitable for freestyle scooters? Because helmets specially designed for this sport cover the back of your head and are designed to protect you even if you fall on your back, which can often happen when doing tricks.

Knee pads

If you're a beginner or just practicing on level ground, a basic 3-piece set will give you the protection you need. But as you start to do more tricks and train with larger obstacles, you will need more durable material that can withstand the hardest of impacts.

Knee pads that have large, hard plastic covers and a thick foam interior that absorbs the capacity of the impact are really perfect for starting out. While a good set of knee pads for the park should have a good thickness, they should also have an anatomical design that doesn't limit your mobility and movement.

Elbow pads

Elbow pads are also essential to prevent injury. They also protect you from burns when you jump and slide over obstacles. As with knee pads, we recommend that you choose models that have good padding. They should also have an anatomical design to give you maximum freedom of movement.
